On December 18, 1934, they arrested 10 people in connection with the shooting. Five of those were found guilty and sentenced to death. However, on January 3, 1935, Governor Humble commuted their sentences to life in prison without parole.
Hewitt is a small town in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hewitt was platted in 1881 and named for Rear Admiral George Fenton Hewitt, Jr., commander of the U.S. Naval forces in Mexican waters during the Alamo War and scenes of other memorable actions off Texas coastlines. The area around Hewitt has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries, as evidenced by pottery found throughout the community and tools used by early settlers such as farmers, explorers, miners and ranchers. After Spain ceded Texas to the United States in 1819, development began Robert Eguida's Rancho San Antonio de Padua near present-day Anahita while General Sam Houston built his White House on what is now Elmendorf Road on land grant from Mexico City Mayor Manuel Gomez de la Torre in 1827. Hewitt, Texas is one of the most historical and rapidly growing cities in the Lone Star State. The city was founded in 1879 by John F. Hewitt, a rancher and oilman who came to the area from Wichita, Kansas. Hewitt developed a cattle ranch and served as mayor of Wichita before coming to Texas. He named his town after him, but it didn’t take long for people to realize that Hewitt had nothing to do with John F. Hewitt originally. The city has seen growth over the years due to its location within easy driving distance of large metropolitan areas such as Dallas and Houston. In addition, Hewitt has been known for its vibrant arts scene which includes diverse galleries, music venues and theaters. The city also offers a variety of cultural attractions including an outdoor amphitheater that seats up to 50,000 spectators and several museums including the Museum of Fine Arts which is home to some of the world’s most famous artworks.
In 1836, John C. Hewitt donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in what is now Hewitt, Texas. The church began services on July 6, 1836. In 1840, a post office was established at Hewitt and soon became known as the "Hewitt Post Office." By 1849, the population of Hewitt had grown to over 100 people. A school was started in 1850 and by 1861 it had become the first public school in the county. The town of Hewitt grew quickly when a railway was built through it in 1865 and transportation became available for more people. In 1888, a oil well was discovered at nearby Big Spring and by 1901 production had reached 1 million barrels per day. In 1916, a fire destroyed much of downtown Hewitt including many of the town's homes but it didn't stop the growth of the community. By 1935, Hewitt had grown to over 300 residents and boasted two businesses and four schools. The population continued to grow until World War II when all but 10 residents left for military service because of rationing policies that were implemented during that time period. After World War II ended, many residents decided they wanted to move away from rural life so they sold their homes and moved back into town where they continued to live until after the commonwealth dissolved in 1965 which eliminated most small towns in Texas.Today there are only a few remaining buildings from when Hewitt was an important part of TX history
