Hewitt is a town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1879 by J.P. Hewitt and named for him. Hewitt's store was built in 1881 and served as the first permanent stop on the newly created Central Texas Railroad. In 1916, Hewitt became one of the original towns in Bastrop County when it was organized from portions of Hardin County. In 1936, Hewitt Post Office closed and all mail went to Austin until 1959 when an extension office opened at Westlake which remained open until 1983When Bastrop County became Dallas County, then Travis County, Hewit post office reopened on October 15th 2013 after being closed for over 20 years

The population of Hewitt was 3,451 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Brownsville-Harlingen metropolitan area. John A. Hewitt was born on October 15, 1851, in what is now rural Stanton County, Kansas Territory (now Iowa), to George Washington Hewitt and his wife Isabella Jane Stephens. George were two of thirteen children born to parents who had emigrated from Fife Scotland during the early 1800s. John A. Hewitt attended public schools until he entered high school in 1869, when he began attending Baylor University where he received a Bachelor's degree in 1876 cum laude. He then returned to Stanton County and acquired land holdings that would form the nucleus for his future home town of Hewitt on November 14,1871 when he married Anna Maria Ladd Smith (born December 20, 1850). Anna Maria Ladd Smith was born near Wichita Falls on November 20th, 1850 to Isaac Neely Smith and his wife Lydia Ann (née Hogg) Smithwick-Neely. Isaac Neely Smith had come from a family of seventeeniblings who all died young except for one sister who married into an influential family near Dallas, Texas before she too passed away at age twenty-four years old giving birth to four children: Ethel Maud Elizabeth “Mae”(1875-1957), Edwin Arlington Bruce(1877-1948), Alma Elizabeth Sprague(1879-1963)and John Newton Richard “Newton”(1881-1969). Of their eighteen siblings eight survived into adulthood; six daughters: Anna Maria (Anna May), Margaret Mary [Doris], Frances Alice [Fannie], Gertrude Belle[Gertrude Belle Morrison], Edith Clare[Edith Clarens]and Evalyn Louise[Evalyn Wilburn]. Five sons: George Washington (George Washington Bruce), Hardin Leroy,[Harry Leroy Hayes], Willis Earl[Willis Earle Jenkins], Charles Edward "Chip"([Charles Edward] Cook) and Raymond James ([Raymond James] Beardsley). In addition one brother Robert Dickson also died young at only nineteen years old leaving behind him three sisters; Agnes Jane Dickson,[Agnes Jane Lewis]; Vera Ellen Dickson; and Emmalee Knapp Dickson.[1][2][3][4]. As members of the prominent Kinney clan they were also descended from Alexander McGillivray heirs to Scots landed estates in Nova Scotia which dated back to 1666.[5][6][7] John A., AnnaMaria & their five boys first moved into their new home on November 14th 1871 when they took occupancy of Ebenezer Capps house which stood just outside present day downtown Hewlettown off FM 620 south of town limits - this house would remain their home until it burned down over Christmas weekend 1896 while they were living with relatives east of town along side other homes belonging to various families including those mentioned earlier such as c/o Mrs Kresser & her son Orville Purdy c/o Wm Whitehouse & son Geo Wells c/o Mrs McCullough Schools started up again Jan 1 1897 with 30 pupils grades PreK thru 8 ½

Hewitt was founded in 1887 as a small farming settlement and has since grown into a major agricultural center with over 2 million acres of irrigated farmland. The community of Hewitt was founded by farmers on the banks of the San Jacinto River. They named their new town after General James Fenton Hewitt who had helped lead the Mexican–American War against Mexico. Hewitt grew rapidly due to irrigation projects begun by J.D. Briscoe and others in the early 20th century. The city's heyday came during World War II when it became an industrial center supplying munitions to both Allied and Axis forces. After the war, HewITT declined as agriculture boomed and social services increased competition for jobs in an era of shrinking government funding opportunities. In recent years, however, growth has returned as HewITT becomes increasingly popular with retirees and students looking for a quiet escape from Houston amid its vibrant nightlife scene
