The Hewitt Rifle Company was founded in 1898 by George Hewitt and his brother-in-law, John H. Stephenson. The company manufactured rifles and shotguns for the military and civilian markets. In 1922, the Hewitt Rifle Company merged with Winchester Arms Company to form the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The company continued to produce firearms until it was purchased by Remington in 1988.

Hewitt is a small community in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Hewitt is located on the Brazos River and has a humid subtropical climate. The townsite of Hewitt was laid out by James White in 1845. The first settler in what is now Hewitt was David Robertson in 1851. The town became an official post office on July 10, 1865, with A.J. Smith as its first postmaster. The Hewitt-Fiesta Railroad ran through the community from 1906 to 1912 and again from 1951 to 1957; it closed down due to lack of traffic. Hewitt had its own high school before it merged with nearby San Angelo High School in 1988. In 2006, Hewitt voters passed a resolution electing themselves mayor and city council members for two years starting January 1st of each year until 2020; these officials were then elected by vote at a special meeting held on November 3rd of that year. In 2016 Mayor Tom Haase won re-election against challenger Don Hoeppner with over 50% of the vote. In 2018 Mayor Tom Haase won his second term against challenger Don Hoeppner with over 50% of the vote.

Today, only a few fragments of the old building remain, while most of the property has been developed into residential tracts. James H. Hewitt was born in 1825 in what is now Delaware County, Ohio. He started out as a farmer but soon became interested in land ownership and development. In 1881, he founded Hewitt Farms with his brother John Hutton and their father Isaac Schiefferhoffer. After purchasing 1,500 acres of agricultural land near Medina City, TX., they began to develop it into a farming community that would become known as Hewitt. The early years were rocky for Hewitt; however, they persevered and eventually became successful agriculturists with a large acreage and many homes/ Villages dotting their holdings across Medina County (now Hudspeth County). They also played an important role in founding Medina University which remains one of the largest higher education institutions in East Texas today (www2/mediathexasuniversity/student%20services/admissions_faqs). James Hutton passed away at age 83 on October 25th, 2019 after an extended illness following multiple surgeries over several months.). His wife Fannie died less than two weeks later on November 3rd at age 82 years 9 months 4 days.) Their five children - James Harry (1881-1920), John Harry (1921-1987), Alice Ethel (1924-2001), Edwin Lorne(1927-2013), and Mary Louise(1929-) - all survived them when they succumbed to cancer at various ages: 81 years 9 months 4 days; 83 years 1 month; 84 years 5 days; 88 year 8 months 2 days; 89 year 3 months 11 days; 90 year 7 months 10 days.) In addition to their farming operations there were gas stations ($0.50 per gallon)and grocery stores ($4/$8)in those early years but these too have long since closed or been replaced by more recent developments such as shopping malls or apartments that line both sides of IH10 traffic approaching Medina from Dallas/Fort Worth suburbs upriver! Today's resident are quite different from those who first live here! Many have married other natives here or immigrated from other parts of TX during ensuing decades... With so much change going on within our borders it’s hard to know where to start! One thing that does stay constant though is our love for chili dogs & country music night!!

Hewitt, Texas was founded on December 1, 1879 by George A. Hewitt and his wife, Anna. The town rapidly grew in population due to its location at the base of the Chisos Mountains and its access to a number of water sources. In 1912, Hewitt became the county seat for Webb County and remains so today.
