In 1907, the first public library opened in town which became one of the largest local libraries in Texas until it closed its doors in 2006 due to budget cuts. The old brushy creek high school also reopened as a community center after being abandoned for many years In 1915, Hewitt became home to America's second air raid warning station when WWI began and remained so until 1945 when it was decommissioned due to advances in technology .
