Hereford is a small town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Hereford began as a cattle ranch and continued to be an agricultural center for many years until it became a bedroom community after World War II. There have been many changes to the town since then, with its growth paralleling that of the surrounding rural areas. The townsite was first settled in 1881 by settlers from English county on the eastern side of what is now San Antonio, Texas. A post office was established in 1882 and named Hereford after Herefordshire, England. In 1886, two brothers founded a cotton gin and gristmill here which became one of the most important businesses in Hereford during its early years. At that time, only five families lived in Hereford; today there are over 100 residents living within walking distance of downtown or its Schools District 2A). In 1925 Hereford elected its first mayor (and still has an elected mayor today), Wm Ellington Hargrave who served until his death in 1961. In 1951 local businessman Leroy “Red” McKnight donated land east of downtown to become McKnight Park which still contains both McKnight Park Golf Course and McKnight Tennis Courts today! Red McKnight also donated money towards construction of Memorial Stadium which helped put here on the map as one of America's "bedroom communities". The economy slowly shifted from agriculture to services after World War II when more people moved into nearby Austin for work opportunities than remained heretofore to farm their land . As employees started commuting back home each day they brought with them their families who soon bought homes closer to work then ever before! This led to another typical change that has followed throughout these years - Due west development took hold with new subdivisions popping up all along I-35W culminating around Lake Travis Boulevard where shopping centers now line up like Lego blocks! Many current residents were born and raised here or spent portions thereof growing up such as my husband Craig who attended high school right here (he grew up playing golf courses adjacent to Interstate 35W)! His father worked at General Motors plant nearby so this little known gem on I-35W definitely played a role in his decision making skills when he decided he wanted some serious property acreage down south...
