On November 3, 1845, the town of Hereford was founded by John Hereford and his brother-in-law, David Robertson. The town was named after Hereford County in England which was then part of Texas. The first Post Office opened in 1846. For a time, Hereford served as the county seat of Hereford County. On May 15, 1861, heretofore independent Republic of Texas seceded from the Union and became an Confederate States of America state. In 1865 the Battle of Corinth occurred in nearby Marshall County which led to the death or injury of many Union soldiers including General Ulysses S. Grant who had moved his headquarters from Fort Worth to Corinth for that purpose.
