In 1865, Hereford became part of Texan Republic and experienced rapid growth due to its location on the Mexico-US border. In 1876, Hereford voters ratified a new constitution providing for local government and electing a mayor and five city council members. After years of growth, the town reached its peak in 1886 when it had a population of 1,500 people. However, by 1893 here was only 500 residents remaining and today there is only A few houses left standing from those days when much larger towns thrived throughout this region
Hereford is a town in Carroll County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Hereford was founded in 1879 by James W. Hargrave and his wife Anna o'Leary Hargrave. The first school in Hereford was built on the corner of Main and Second Streets in 1879. It was called the Female Academy and was operated by Anna O’Leary Hargrave. In 1881, Hereford had its own post office which opened with three mailboxes. The first postmaster, John Cramer, served from January 3rd, 1881 to December 31st, 1886. In 1902, Hereford incorporated as a town under the name of Hereford Heights. On July 14th of that year, The local newspaper changed its name to The Herald and began publication under that name until it ceased publication in 1907. In 1906-1907 here also took place an event known as “The Great White Christmas Parade” which featured floats made out of colorful paper reindeer costumes decorated with white ornaments and snowflakes outside of the town limits around First Street/Second Avenue intersection surrounded by candy canes for children trick or treating for their treats
