Hereford is a small town located in the Haskell County Sheriff's Office District, about 26 miles southwest of Amarillo. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is named after Herefordshire, England. The first settler in Hereford was James Tipton, who arrived in 1851. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in Haskell County. James Tipton married Anna Ladd and they had seven children: James (1852-1929), Sarah Jane (1855-1945), Wm. H., Andrew F., Emma J., and John A.. Anna died of tuberculosis when James was ten years old and he took her death hard; however, he later remarried to Martha Whitehead and had six more children with her: Harry Denton (1860-1941), Rupert Everett (1863-1950), Franklin Nance (1867-1937), Maybelle Thorndyke (1869-1954), Betty Jean Everett (1872-1964). James Tipton became a railroad surveyor for Texas Central Railroad and oversaw construction of their line from Amarillo to Wichita Falls through Hereford Township on December 15, 1864. In 1865, he donated land to the town for a courthouse square which would serve as its central business district until it was replaced by the present courthouse building in 1912. The area now occupied by Main Street became residential streets in 1922 when Hereford incorporation was granted by the State of Texas under article III of the state Constitution. In 1924 Hereford won its first school board election with three members - two men and one woman - after being denied representation on previous boards due to race Discrimination laws then current Massachusetts law at that time. Two years later here also won its first post office - reopened on November 3rd due to mail delivery being suspended during World War I - with three employees serving as mail carriers between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth from 1921 until 1945 inclusive! The post office closed again on July 14th 1975 because of budget cuts within TX state government although it has been reopened several times since then! Prior to becoming incorporated as a municipality there were only individual farms scattered throughout Haskell County including what is nowherefordschooldistrict . Some residents still farm today but many have moved into homeownership or light industry such asmanufacturingandmining etc etc because there are no viable commercial alternatives available near them without leaving their homes or communities! Some interesting facts about Hereford include that: It’s oldest resident – Wm H – died age 96 in 1984; There are still people living here full time who were born before 1870; “Forrest Gump” movie set location used for scene where Forrest tells Laura she should stay while Sherman goes home; Post Office #1 opened “ HEREFORD 0500 HOURS LOCAL TIME” Nov 3 1924
Hereford is a town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. In 1875 Hereford residents voted to incorporate as a town. The first post office opened in November 1875. In 1896 Hereford incorporated as an independent city and changed its name to Hereford. On December 1, 1912 Hereford became a county seat of Dallas County after it was combined with other nearby towns including Irving and Garland. The county courthouse moved from Garland to Hereford in 1924 and the original jail building also burned down in 1928. A new jail was built on land donated by the community and dedicated on October 15, 1929. The HEREFORD CHURCH was built in 1935-36 by local citizens for $10,000 using local materials donated by businesses and individuals within the town limits of Hereford. The church contains several original features such as hand-carved stone steps leading up to the door which date back to 1886 when this property was owned by Mrs J F Ireland who also served as treasurer of hereforald elections that year
