Hereford, Texas is a town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Hereford is named after Herefordshire in England. The first settlers arrived in 1881 and filed a claim on November 15 that year. They were led by Samuel Pryor who built the first house in what is now Hereford. A post office was established in Hereford on December 5, 1881. The town was incorporated as a community on March 11, 1886. In 1907, herefords water tower became one of only two standing towers remaining from the days when local wells supplied most of the town's needs until well drilling began to become common and more expensive methods were available for extracting oil and gas inexpectantly around this time (eighty years later). Telephone service began within the community upon incorporation and has been provided ever since by Ameritech Communications Company which acquired it from BellSouth TX Incorporated in 2006; both companies are still active today providing high-speed internet service to all residents without contracts or up-front fees through their fiber optic lines as well as voice phone service with no contract required! In addition to its water tower which continues serving as an iconic landmark for many decades now (and also still functioning), another prominent landmark from early times in Hereford was Elmhurst Baptist Church which stands today across South Main Street from Community Hall just off US 281/US 290 east of IH10 about 3 miles south of downtownHouston! This church served both religious individuals and larger groups such as picnics and plays alrounds during those early days until 1956 when services moved indoors due to fear that lightning could damage windows! In recent years some restoration work has taken place including re-landscaping of several blocks NE corner lot currently occupied by homebuilder at 4486 North Shepherd Road - formerly known as "Pryor's acre" & "Upper Big Branch Spring House" & presently known simply as "Church property"! A major event taking place within our town took place on October 20th 1989 when over $2 million worth of new shopping center development project finally came online making herefords biggest retail center yet with anchor tenants Sears Roebuck& Co., JCPenney & Co., Kmart Corporation & other big box retailers present including Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Parade Float! Also included were 2 restaurants: Zingerman's Deli near handlesouthwest corner U sprawl mall parking lot next doorzingsersionscoppeetweenthechurchandthemall&overheadwalkwayto skirtinteriorofshoppingcenter
