Henderson, Texas is a small town in Denton County, Texas. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and is part of the Dallas-Ft. Worth agglomeration. The first settlers in Henderson were those who arrived from Arkansas in 1857. They built their homes on what is now State Highway 84, about five miles east of present day Henderson. A post office was established there on November 15, 1857, and operated until May 9, 1861 when it was discontinued because no mail reached the community. In 1865 Patrick Hickey opened a general store at what is now 6th Street and Elm Avenue in Henderson. He became known as one of the early merchants in Henderson because he sold goods to farmers and other residents throughout much of central Denton County. In 1871 John Couch set up a stagecoach stop just south of modern day Henderson on Highway 84 near present day Springdale Road to serve travelers travelling between Fort Worth and Dallas-Ft Worth. In 1872 Johnny Applegate opened his first grocery store at 7th Street and Elm Avenue northeast of downtown Henderson with merchandise supplied by Hickey from his store down the street. In 1876 Camp Bowie troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded eastern Denton County during the American Civil War seeking plunder or slaves that they thought were being held within Confederate lines northwest of Fort worth; however no slaves were found within Confederate lines so camp Bowie withdrew its forces returning to Arkansas without achieving any major military objectives beyond disrupting local commerce! In 1880s two brothers named Robert Waddell started farming land north of downtown Henderson along current Day US 70/State Highway 82 (now Old FM 527). From this land they grew corn, beans, potatoes and cotton into what is now Henderson’s largest crop production area today! After purchasing 100 acres adjacent to their farmstead in 1905 they name it “Village Green” after nearby Villages Green (later Arlington) which had been founded by Methodist missionaries several years earlier! On July 3rd 1907 (the date still celebrated as Independence Day), citizens met at Village Green for an election that resulted in their selection as the site for a new courthouse! The cornerstone for this structure was laid on October 10th 1912 by Judge Josten Crouch Sr., one of only three men ever elected county judge in Texas! As most towns began annexing surrounding municipalities during the 1920s thru 1940s growth continued unabated with approximately 2,000 people residing therein by 1950!! This rapid growth led to numerous annexation attempts culminating with consolidation forming Denton County into one entity effective January 1st 1953!!! On September 17th 1955 Drury Farrell died suddenly while vacationing at Gulfporttp Mississippi less than three weeks prior to scheduled term expiration for then District Attorney Donny Payne!!! District Attorney Hickman took over & successfully prosecuted Farrell’s killers resulting in life imprisonment instead!!!!! On November 11th 1957Denton County voters passed an ordinance approving consolidated government forms following approval by state legislators!!!! On December 4th 1957 Commissioners Court convened & adopted Resolution #5 appointing Donny Payne our new District Attorney !! This event marked end days for organized crime activity centered aroundVillage Green due to heavy law enforcement presence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
