Henderson became an important location for ammunition production during World War II because it lay along the Katy River Valley which served as a supply route for the government's munitions factories throughout Texas and Oklahoma. After the war, Henderson experienced rapid growth due to its status as an agricultural center and its proximity to major towns in western Texas such as Lubbock and Amarillo. However, socioeconomic conditions began to deteriorate during the late 1960s and early 1970s as local businesses closed down or were forced to compete against larger competitors in neighboring cities. By the end of the decade, there were only five stores left in town compared to twenty-five beforeowntown development started widespread throughout Henderson County .
