Henderson, Texas is located in the Texan Panhandle about 30 miles west of Dallas and forms part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The town was founded in 1881 by cattle baron John Henderson as a post office on the banks of the Trinity River. Henderson became an agricultural center with plantations and ranches that produced beef, cotton, pigs, horses, and other livestock. In 1907, Henderson was named for Major General James H. Folsom who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Gertrude Atherton Folsom married Folsom in 1907 and they raised six children before he died in 1915. When he left his fortune to his wife, she used it to build the first Presbyterian church in Henderson which opened its doors to the public on October 1st, 1916. The townsite was platted by General George Custer during his ill-fated attempt to cross the Arkansas River while leading an American forces against Mexico’s army at Palo Alto Rancho de las Cruces on November 24th, 1876. The rancho was located across from present day Parkland High School which served as a battlefield between American forces and Mexican troops during that battle two days later onNovember 25th when cavalryman Geronimo attacked American soldiers from Companies A and B under Captains John Chilton (A) and James Bowie (B). On November 26th Custer’s body was found among those lost at Palo Alto Rancho de las Cruces after being ambushed by Mexican troops led by Colonel Vicente Guerrero who succeeded Santa Anna as president of Mexico following his victory over Ulysses S Grant’s army at San Jacinto Bridge on July 6th of that year. Because there were no bodies recovered from Palo Alto Rancho de las Cruces until more than 100 years later it was assumed that Custer had been killed along with his force when they were ambushed by Mexicans during their search for him near what is now Interstate 10 west of downtown Dallas. In 1932 Henderson experienced its first tornado outbreak which caused damage to several homes including one owned by William Holden who would go onto become one of Texas’ most successful businessmen ever having started oil production at some point prior to World War II within what is today Colony Hills Golf Course off County Road 495 northwest of town limits where he built a new golf course specifically for this purpose just outside city limits then allowed developers access to it through eminent domain after World War II because he didn’t want anyone living next door without permission or compensation so as not to impact development potential within city boundaries since City Limits extended only 3/8ths mile northward into unincorporated parts of Preston County east side extending into Collin County northwest side extending into Rockwall County northeast side formingwiched between Planters Fork Creek flowing into Trinity River south side formingwiched between Amon Carter Reservoir lying east side along I-10 just outside Arlington bounds then terminating near Farmers Branch Municipal Airport just inside city limits today making up 8% or all Butler County – 22% or all grand total area currently belonging solely or predominantly to Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex . When America entered World War II veteran farmers Jerald Easley (a native New Yorker)and Vernon Lawson offered their land adjacent to Corpus Christi Naval Air Station northeast corner FM 1384 for use as military airfields providing runways could be available rather than using open fields adjacent Kenedy Bayou located immediately east & south ends able Army airfield southeast corner FM 1627 also offering 5 acres each but never became operational largely due lack thereof needed Lake Whitney reservoir connecting Corpus Christi Naval Air Station & FtSan Antonio Missile Range becoming available thru construction project initiated early 1960 phases resulting late 1966 opening allowing installation & commissioning systems associated witit acquisition Missouri Missiles System becoming operational ). The Military Parks Act Of 1949 created USAAF Fort Worth National Military Park concurrent witit Fort Worth State Fairgrounds & White Sands Missile Range situated within park boundary . By 1970 park boundary extended 7/8ths mile northerly into unincorporated parts o Preston & Collin Counties formwiched between Planters Fork Creek flowing into Trinity River south side formingwiched between Amon Carter Reservoir lying east side along I-10 just inside Arlington bounds then terminating near Farmers Branch Municipal Airport just inside city limits today making up 8% or all Butler county – 22% or all grand total area currently belonging solely or principally
In 1881, Henderson was founded as a small town by Texas Rangers. It grew quickly and soon became a major cattle center. In the 1920s, Henderson was named one of the "10 Most Desirable Towns in Texas." The population reached 100,000 by 1930. By World War II, Henderson had become an important military base with its own airfield and several factories. However, the town's prosperity ended during the war when prices for cattle plummeted and other industries closed down. The community slowly declined until it vanished in the 1950s when development consolidated nearby Austin into a more urban area.
