Today, Henderson is a small city with a population of just over 3,500 people. George Henderson was born in 1807 in what is now West Virginia. He came to Texas in 1848 as part of the Goliad expedition under General Sam Houston. Henderson played an important role in developing Texas and later served as governor of Texas from 1865-1868 and 1870-1872. After leaving office he moved to Henderson where he died in 1902. Lucilla Henderson was born in 1822 in Ohio and married George Henderson on November 19th, 1850. They would have five children: Lillie (baptized December 9th, 1850), Evaline (baptized January 20th, 1861), George Balthazar (baptized October 5th 1860), Willis Averill (baptized June 10th 1863) and Alice Ann (born October 7th 1865). The early years of Henderson were difficult for the town due to lack of natural resources such as water or land. However, by 1890 the community had grown rapidly thanks to its location on the Llano River and its easy access to railroad tracks." In 1893 recognition arrived for Henderson when it became one of three towns selected for inclusion within the newly created City of Austin along with Georgetown and Montrose." This growth continued through World War I when industry shifted from agriculture into oil production." Despite this change however; "Henderson still remains an agricultural center today with many families grow crops such as corn, beans etc., while others manufacture items such as home furnishings or automobiles.""

Henderson, Texas was first settled in 1836 by John Henderson. The community was named for him. It grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, and by 1865 it had a population of 2,500. In 1875, Henderson became the county seat of Robertson County.
