However, things started to unravel for Henderson when oil discoveries were made in nearby Titusville in 1859. This led to increased traffic and competition for limited land around town. In 1865, Henderson went bankrupt due to this increase in competition and poverty. Many of its residents fled the town or worse, moving into other towns in search of opportunity. Today only a few remaining buildings from Henderson remain standing – most notably the original bank building that still stands as one of downtown’s most iconic landmarks.
