During World War II, Henderson became one of America's most important industrial cities due to its production of munitions and other war materials such as rubber products and aircraft parts. After the war ended, agriculture became more important here; however, since 2000ork have resumed rapid growth due to new development in downtown Henderson along with new restaurants and shopping venues throughout Main Street redevelopment project which has increased retail District’s population by more than 25%. Henderson was founded in 1836 by John Henderson and his wife, Sarah. The first store in the town was a log cabin. The town grew quickly, and by 1840 there were three stores and two schools. By 1850, Henderson had a population of 350 people. In 1853, the town became an independent school district. In 1861, Henderson became part of the new Republic of Texas.
