Harlingen, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 871 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Hudspeth County by population. The first Europeans to visit what is now Harlingen were Spanish traders and explorers who called it San Marcos de Tejas (the "martyr's field"). In 1835, Colonel James Fenton established Fort Bend County Seat at what is now Midland on San Jacinto River near present day Midland Park. The town site changed hands multiple times until it reached its current location near the mouth of Buffalo Bayou in 1848 when ranchers gave up their holdings to make way for oil explorations being conducted by Houstonians under General Sam Houston. In 1855–1857, American forces fought a series of engagements at Buffalo Bayou during Mexican War II known as the Battle of Buffalo Bayou which resulted in Mexican losses totaling more than 20 officers and men killed or wounded including Josue Martinez who was scalped after his horse was captured during this battle In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg unsuccessfully attempted to cross Buffalo Bayou into Mexico while accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel John Crain and four hundred soldiers from Galveston; all were destroyed when Mexican artillery opened fire from across the watercourse resulting in Bragg's abortive crossing attempt becoming known as Bragg's Massacre Hudspeth County was created on November 15th 1850 from portions east of Dallas/Fort Worth boundary along Buffalo Bayou which had been annexed by Dallas just prior to that date On February 1st 1861 both Dallas and Hudspeth Counties joined United States as a result of Annexation Act No 12 uniting all 37 southern counties within Lone Star State following secessionist movements within Kansas & Missouri

However, many people left Harlingen after learning about Confederate policies and practices. Afterward, few businesses remain that are associated with this time period in town’s history. In 1896, an oil well was drilled near today’s downtown Harlingen; however, due to lack of working knowledge about wells at that time (and also because there were no pipelines available linking refineries located farther away), oil production did not take off until later that decade. As a result of this early investment by industry leaders within town proper (rather than anonymous investors),Harlingen has been able to maintain its significant level of economic stability over time - despite occasional fluctuations due to changes within regional commodity prices or political events outside its control. Today's downtown is home to numerous commercial establishments as well as libraries/ museums which serve as anchor institutions for local economies throughout south Texas
It was in 1836 when Texas became a part of the United States. The territory was purchased from Mexico by Anglo Americans and named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then become an American hero.
