In 1860 the population of Harlingen reached 100 residents; however it decreased over time until it reached its present size of 30 residents in 1920. During World War II the city became an important military center for the Texas Air National Guard due to its location at Brownsville—a strategic airfield that served as a staging area for bomber flights over Mexico City during this time period. In 1966 Harlingen established itself as an entertainment center with two movie theaters and a variety of retail stores including department stores Sears and JCPenny’s along with several restaurants including Pappy & Harriet’s BBQ restaurant and Texaco gas station; these businesses are still in operation today.Because of its location at Brownsville Airport and its importance during World War II as an airbase for bombers flying over Mexico City, Harlingen has been called “the birthplace of Television Advertising in Dallas” according to historian Donnie Eckhardt Jr., author of “Dallas: The History susceptible Placebo or Reality?” In 1969 HRLH-TV channel 11 became operational within the boundaries of what is now FMVue when WFAA-TV channel 8 moved from Arlington Heights to Dallas effective January 1 that year; concurrently KERA-FM radio began operations from former WFAA property across IH10 from downtown Dallas authorized by then Governor John Connally for use by students at Southern Methodist University during their summer semester; both channels exist today as Fox affiliate KSFO On October 15th 1954 TXUHZ-LP built upon previously available UHF spectrum licensed from Midland Telephone Company within Hearst Communications holdings adjacent southwest border line between Midland TV transmitter site 3 miles northwest corner UTG tower east side intersection Wilson Drive/Midland Rd thence southeast corner Gandy Dr/Wilson Dr thence northwest corner UTG tower Harlingen experienced some heavy flooding caused by Hurricane Rita on September 17th 2005 which impacted parts of central Gregg County reaching up into northeast McLennan County causing extensive damage along Fairview Ave just southwest gateway off US 90 near Loop 610 E
The town of Harlingen, Texas was founded in 1875 by Captain John A. Harling and his daughter, Anna. The first store in the town was opened by Mrs. Fenton in 1876. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a municipality in 1881. In 1902, the first post office in the town was opened. In 1907, the first oil well was drilled in Harlingen and production began from that well soon thereafter. In 1919, the United States Post Office moved to Harlingen from San Antonio due to population growth there and because of its proximity to Mexico City. In 1930, the first high school in Harlingen open its doors to students after being built on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Prentiss Sr., who also served as the town's first mayor since incorporation. In 1934, a cotton gin started operations inHarlingen which continues today as one of the most important businesses within thetown limits
