Harlingen is a town located in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,924 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name Harlingen was given to the community by Captain John A. Harling who settled there in 1836. The first post office was established in 1837 and named for Captain Harlingen. The first settlers arrived during the early 1800s and were primarily German immigrants who farmed their land and raised livestock. In 1836, Captain John A. Harling settled in what is now Harlingen and named it after himself. By 1840, some English-speaking Texans had arrived and began trading with the Germans, so renamed businesses became German business names such as "Harlan & Sons" or "Fischer Brothers." In 1865, a post office called “New Braunfels” was established on the border of this town with San Antonio and operated until it was discontinued in 1896 because of mail fraud committed by its namesake New Braunfels Postmaster Charles Wohlgemuth). In 1886 when Texas became an state, Harlingen (along with all other towns within San Antonio County) voted to be admitted into the new state as a municipality under Act 9 which created county government within each individual county instead of under state government like before which towns were apportioned among individual counties based on their population size rather than based on their economic prosperity or strategic location within that county boundaries like they are today. Today’s residents are descendants of those original pioneers who made this small community possible over more than two centuries ago through hard work and determination while also observing many local customes that continue to this day including voting rights for citizens above age 25 years old along with numerous recreational opportunities available both inside and outside of town limits!
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded. The area that is now Harlingen was part of this nascent state. In 1876, the town was surveyed and named for Colonel John H. Harlingen, a United States Army officer who had served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The town slowly grew as a farming community, with small businesses and residences dotting the landscape. In 1912, a post office was established in Harlingen by Major General Edwin A. Cady. The town continued to grow through the years and by 1970 there were over 1,500 residents living in Harlingen proper and several thousand more scattered throughout its surrounding rural areas
