In the early 1990s, Harlingen was a small town in the peripheries of San Antonio. The population was only about 30,000 people and it was considered one of the most rural areas in Texas. The first white people to live in Harlingen were Judge John Haggerty and his family who arrived from Kentucky in 1836. They set up a farm on the present site of downtown Harlingen. In 1839 they married Miss Alice Beard and moved to what is now east side of town where they built a cabin and began to farm. In 1840 Judge Haggerty's grandson, James Haggerty Sr., inherited some land north of downtown Harlingen from his father-in-law. James Haggerty Jr.'s sons, James Jr., John Denton, and Thomas took over farming operations around 1870 when their father died intestate. The first school in Harlingen was established on the corner of First Street and Elm Avenue in 1864 by J.W Masterson with six students taught by Drury Clements while he was local superintendent of public instruction for Hudspeth County. A new school building replaced the old one which had been destroyed by fire in 1903. A post office called "Hardingen" was established at this location on December 12, 1865, by act of Congress; it remained until January 8th, 1901 when it became part of Austin (see Townsend's Directory for list of towns within Austin). This early history can beagoly trace back to James Haggerty Sr.'s purchase from David Beardsley (the original owner) approximately 3 acres west of today's Main Street which formed what would become northeast corner Lot # 2150/2701 NW 2nd Ave across from UTSA campus
