Harlingen, Texas is a town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1875 by German immigrants and named for Friedrich Wilhelm Harlingen, an industrialist who had immigrated to the United States in 1849. Harlingen became a center of cotton production during the late 19th century and early 20th century before declining economically in the 1930s and 1940s. In recent decades it has become a bedroom community for Dallas. The first settler in what would become Harlingen was Hermann Kappeler, who arrived in 1875. He erected a gristmill on the upper course of San Antonio River. By 1888 there were nine small businesses operating within two miles (3 km) of each other in what would soon be called "The Village". A post office was established at this location on July 1, 1889; its nameakes remain today as part of Harlingen's founding lore: H-A-R-L-I-N-D-E-N

The city of Harlingen, Texas was founded in 1879 by two men who were looking for a place to ranch. The town soon became a hub for the cattle industry and has since been known for its cowboy culture and historical landmarks. In recent years, Harlingen has become a popular tourist destination with its many attractions and interesting history. Here we will introduce you to some of the most important aspects of Harlingen’s history and give you an idea of what it means when it comes to the Lone Star State. In 1879, two men named John Wirtz and George Pankow decided to establish a new community in what is now northern Collin County, TX. They named their town Harlingen after one of their family members, Heinrich Harting, who had already settled in Austin. The Harting family owned several thousand acres in eastern Williamson County where they grew corn and wheat until they sold off their land in 1865. In 1876, Heinrich’s brother-in-law Samuel Morse offered him $10 per acre to settle near his farm on the Neches River east of present-day Dallas. The offer was accepted and the first settlers started arriving in September of that year. Hardingen quickly became a busy center for cattle ranching activity as well as commerce from local goods such as flour, meat, eggs, butter, potatoes and other vegetables grown on the surrounding countryside. By 1880 there were over 100 residents living in Harlingen proper with additional families scattered around rural areas including Humble (now Flower Mound), Bowie (now Midland), Wimberley (now Rockwall) and others within close range of the city limits. Businesses flourished thanks to good transportation connections via wagon roads connecting local villages with distant ranches or markets downriver at Corpus Christi or Galveston Bayou crossings open only during certain months of the year when access was available). Many people also got their livelihoods from trading with Native Americans along the Llano River corridor – trade that formed part of Eventually Cattle drive culture which developed out West during this time period Some notable residents from this time include JF Byrnes who served as Mayor from 1886 until his death in 1893; James Guthrie who became Sheriff in 1888; ranchers Fenton Garrison (1886-1901) and Harry Ladd (1892-1992); banker Averill Hastings Spencer; journalist/editor Alfred Iverson; Dr David Starr Jordan; businessman/ farmer Elisha Cooke Carleton…the list goes on! As early as 1907 there were plans underway for development near downtown Harlingen which would eventually result in the creation of what is now Parker Square Boulevard adjacent to Municipal Airport today! At this point things looked positive for Harlingtonians but World War I interrupted any further growth before anything ever happened! However even though war didn’t bring much prosperity it did manage to destroy much old infrastructure including many homes which are still standing today like Main Street Telephone building dating back to 1923 while also leaving behind some beautiful examples like Rosedale Cemetery which was built between 1902-1906 next door to Springtown Methodist Church! Many people turned towards agriculture during these difficult times such as Willis Gibbs who raised crops on 1 million acres north central Texas near Wichita Falls between 1915 & 1925 while also working on developing oil properties southwestern Colorado Springs among other things indications abound that farming wasn’t just an aspectof local life here either but slowly beganto take hold statewide due largely theretofore unexplored resources located beneath our soil note: One can only imagine how different things would have been if those same resources hadn’t come ashore courtesy OF DENTON HELLERSTEIN!! Kansas City real estate developer? ). For those keeping score at home another note worth noting is thatHarlington had no 4 digit zip code back then!!!). After World War II ended most businesses closed up shop except for a few small ones such as KFC where company founder Dr Pepper Snapple Group took over operation post 1945 . This led directly into suburbia becoming more prevalent throughout North Texas especially after deregulation occurred following Nixon declareignation OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!!). It hasn't stopped yet however with many companies moving away like AT&T moving all their headquarters out East after purchase by Time Warner earlier this year followed by Kroger weeks later !). Anyway enough about my ramblings ;-) ). onto more important matters 😉 ). As you can see pretty much everything That made Harlington great came AFTERWWII!!!!!!!!!!!!!). And sometimes good old fashioned hard work pays off like witness plenty occuring hereabouts like WW2 veteran Alonzo Mayo being elected mayor 3 times consecutively…..all without ever having run for office prior 😉 )
The town of Harlingen, Texas was founded in 1881 by Horatio Alger and his wife Nannie. The town grew rapidly due to the arrival of cattle drives and later, the oil industry. By 1907, Harlingen had a population of over 1,000 people. The oil boom ended in the early 1920s and Harlingen slowly lost its importance until the 1990s when it regained some popularity as a manufacturing center for clothing and other items. In 2006, Harlingen was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its heritage significance.
