The Harlingen Independent School District has a long and proud history of arming students. On November 3, 1923, the district voted to arm all its students with handguns in order to prevent school violence. The vote was met with opposition from some parents who argued that handguns were not enough to stop school shootings and were instead considered Weapons of War. On February 15, 1927, the Harlingen Board of Education passed an ordinance allowing individuals over the age of 18 to purchase firearms for their own use at gun shows. This ordinance was repealed on September 12, 1933 after the stock market crash caused by the Great Depression. In 1938,Harlingen voters approved a $5 million bond issue in order to build a new high school and shooting range. The new school was completed in 1941 and named Harlingen High School after the vote results. The high school also became home to Texas A&M University’s Pistol Team which fields competitive teams during college football season.
Harlingen, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first post office in Harlingen was established on December 12, 1876, and was called White Sands. On November 16, 1907, the name of the town changed to Harlingen after its founder and namesake Mr. Harry Hargrave Harlingen who also served as mayor from 1902 to 1904 and as judge from 1906 to 1908. The community started off as a small farming village with only 10 residents in 1910. The arrival of oil drilling rigs increased production in nearby Eagle Ford shale fields which led to an increase in population and businesses in Harlingen throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1960, when Interstate 20 was built through Hudspeth County (the original county seat), much of what is now eastern Harlingen became annexed by Austin while western Harlingen remained rural until the early 1990s when many families moved into eastern areas for job opportunities during the oil boom times During World War II many young men from northeastern Texas enlisted or volunteered with military units stationed near San Antonio before they returned home to their families during peacetime and began college education while still serving overseas Many people who have lived here over time commented that it has always been a close-knit community where everyone knew one another regardless of race or ethnicity despite some very segregated times along racial lines throughout history

According to the 2000 census, Harlingen had a population of 98.814. The town was founded in 1876 by German-Americans who came overland from Texas. The first post office was established in 1879 and the first store was opened in 1881. In 1890, the town became a city and it has since grown to become one of the most populous cities in Brazoria County. The downtown area is home to many businesses and restaurants, along with a number of libraries, churches, schools and other public facilities. There are also several football stadiums located within walking distance of the city center. Harlingen is known for its agricultural products such as corn, beans, pigskin beef and cotton (both white and black). The local cotton gin produced some of the world's best-quality yarn until it closed in 1984. Today there are several small businesses that continue production of these goods although most activities now take place outside of Harlingen proper. One major industry that continues to thrive locally is manufacturing; notably this includes textiles (mainly clothing), plastics (such as car parts) and truck parts among others. A number of companies have been founded here over the years including CNT Corporation which manufactures transmission systems for large trucks; Hanesbrands Inc., which manufactures hats & headwear; National Broadcasting Company -owned KPRC - produces national TV programming from their studios here; Trinity International Airlines -based out of Dallas - operates an air cargo hub at George Bush Intermodal Airport adjacent to Harlingen Municipal Airport; Baylor University creates new products for global markets through their School Of Textiles lab located on campus; as well as numerous smaller businesses processing various types of materials used domestically or exported abroad hereabouts including metal recycling operations run by JBS Energy Solutions LLC.; agricultural processing company based out of Lubbock called Agricorp while two hog farms operated by Tyson Foods Incorporated remain operational today despite being placed into receivership during 2007-2008Brian Howlett Photography
The town of Harlingen was founded in 1871 by a group of Dutchmen who arrived on the Texas frontier. The town grew quickly, and in 1902 it became a city. In 1931, Harlingen became an International Communication City, and in 1978 it became the first city to be designated as a bilingual center for the Mexican-American population of the United States.
