Harlingen is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Harlingen were men who came from Kentucky in 1836 to found a rancho grant near present day Taylorville. In 1840 they organized as the First Methodist Church and began trading with Indians and cattle drives brought them news of new land grants along the Frio River near Fort Worth. In 1845 James Polk was inaugurated as President of the United States and his Cabinet included two Texans: Sam Houston and James Kountze. Polk appointed Lieutenant Colonel George Buell to command an expedition against Mexico which was aborted because of illness on October 16th, 1846 after making landfall off Brownsville Bayou east of San Antonio; this event led to Mexican–American War (1846-48). A year later Captain John Crain arrived with a force under General Scott to retake New Braunfels from Mexican forces under Santa Anna; he destroyed all infrastructure including cotton plantations before withdrawing after skirmishing with Mexican forces at Palo Alto Bridge on November 15th. In 1850 Harlingen had one post office, five stores and eighty residents; by 1860 it had five stores and one hundred residents. A school was opened in 1865 for grades one through six; by 1870 there were fourteen schools in Cameron County operating according to state laws then governing education within county boundaries; by 1880 there were thirty-eight schools operating statewide under federal law providing for compulsory attendance by students between the ages of 6 and 21 years old.) On December 12th, 1861 Confederate troops burned down Union Arms store #1 located at 205 E Main Street in what is now known as downtown Harlingen. This event marks the first time that Texas seceded from the Union duringthe American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended four years later on January 3rd, 1871 all public schools became private academies operated by individual families until 1975 when state law changed back to require public education for all pupils age 6 through 21 years old.) After several decades without any major development or growth within town limits until around 1990s when local entrepreneurs started businesses such as gas stations, restaurants etc., downtown redevelopment got underway spearheaded by Mayor Darrell Cline with help from city government funding starting in 2006/2007 followed up through technical assistance throughout 2009/2010 dubbed “Harlingen Restoration Project” which saw many new businesses come online including Denny's BBQ & Grill (now Chili's), Live music venues like Max's Kansas City Barbecue & Grille (now Brixxas) & Live Art Gallery called "The Arts District"which reopened its doors on May 30th 2011 following extensive renovations costing over $115K dollars - becoming Cameron County’s most successful revitalization project ever)
In 1836, Harlingen was founded by Captain John Wesley Hardin and his wife, Sarah. The town grew quickly and soon had a school and store. In 1840, the Hardins built the first public house in Harlingen. By 1851, the town had a population of around 150 people. In 1853, Harlingen became part of Texas and residents voted to name their new community after General Sam Houston. The town continued to grow until it had a population of 5,000 by 1860.
