Harlingen, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The name comes from German settlers who named it "Harlan" after a river in Bavaria. The first settlement in what is now Harlingen happened around 1845 when three families emigrated from Germany to what is now Texas. One family, the Ellingtons, built a log cabin on the present day corner of US-81 and FM 2096. In 1851 two more families moved to Harlingen from Illinois and Missouri: the Harts and the Pritchett brothers. They started an agricultural enterprise that produced corn, beans, pigs, horses and other livestock products until 1865 when railroads came into operation and transportation became more important than production. In 1907 Drury & McNutt Electric Light Company was founded in Harlingen by businessmen Darryl Ellington (1872-1955) and William McNutt (1871-1957). They were followed by Waco Electric Light Company which opened its doors on December 12th 1912; First National Bank of Harlingen opened its doors on October 15th 1913; Gassner's Department Store was established in 1916 by Omer Gassner (1873-1953), son of Jacob Gassner (1824-1900). In 1925 Ladd's Hardware store opened its door with an inventory of over 100 items including radios, vacuum cleaners and tractors! The post office operated out of a building that still stands today on US 81 near FM 2096 which served as Post Office until 1957 when it closed due to lack of mail volume. In 1959 First Baptist Church began services at this location with Reverend Clyde Ivey officiating at both services for many years before he died in 2003 at age 92%. Mr. Ivey's widow Mrs._Ivey continued serving as church pastor until her retirement in 2013 after 27 years service! Today there are several churches located throughout town but First Baptist remains our community’s largest religious group!

The first post office was established in 1851, and the town became a county seat in 1857. In 1865, Harlingen was named for Major General David G. Harlingen, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Texas (1867-1872). The city of Harlingen was founded in 1907 by Mayor E.O. Hauser and is located on the banks of the Trinity River.
