In 1881, a group of men from Harlingen founded the Harlingen Rifle and Pistol Club to keep firearms in the community. The club met every other month to discuss Arms & Ammunition, which was the first magazine published in Texas. In 1905, the club became known as the “Harlingen Riflemen’s Association.” The club purchased its first gun in 1908 and soon began holding annual meetings at the old post office building on Main Street. In 1912, they moved into their current facility on Nueces Street. The association continued to meet until it disbanded in 1916 due to World War I; however, members still kept shotguns and pistols locked up during that time. The next year saw the inception of the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA). The TSRAs were formed with a goal of promoting public safety by providing registration for handguns and rifles. The association also sponsored rifle ranges across Texas. From 1921-1927, TSRAs hosted their own state championships which are now considered national championships. From 1927-1929, they also held international tournaments throughout Texas; these tournaments allowed more people from around the world to participate and learn about American firearms culture. In 1935, TXRAnation merged with NRA; this merger led to increasing firearm regulation within India through importations of Apache rifles into America after World War II because of various Indian political unrest related to arms purchases by America's ally.[1] This event has been cited as one of Harlingen's earliest firearm events[2].

The city of Harlingen, Texas is located in Hudspeth County, just east of the Mexican state of Veracruz. The first settlers in this area were the Caddo people who arrived in 1836. They built a small trading post near what is now downtown Harlingen and started growing corn and cotton. In 1850, a group of Texans led by Colonel James Bowie arrived in this area and began to develop the town into a thriving center for trade and industry. The city was named after General George H. McClellan’s old headquarters at Harlingen, Texas which was destroyed by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war, General McClellan moved his command from Harper’s Ferry to Galveston where he founded the Army Medical Department on November 10th, 1865. The city was renamed as Harlingen on October 1st, 1886 in honor of General John P. “Jimmie” Jenkins who had served with distinction during the war. In 1915, Harlingen became an affiliate member of the United States Zone of World Commerce and soon began to emerge as one of America’s leading commercial centers. With its numerous manufacturing plants and heavy industry, it rapidly became known as one of America’s most important economic engines both domestically and abroad. The city experienced some dramatic growth during World War II with its production facilities active in shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, munitions manufacture and other critical wartime industries. Post-war prosperity continued through various waves of suburbanization until finally reaching its final form in the early 21st century when downtown Harlingen experienced significant gentrification rates that have transformed it into one of Mexico City’s most popular tourist destinations

The town of Harlingen was founded in 1848, and it grew quickly due to its location on the Chisholm Trail. In 1870, a railroad was built through the area, and Harlingen became an important transportation center. The town continued to grow until the late 1970s when it experienced a decline in population due to suburbanization and other factors. Today, Harlingen is a small community with a few hundred residents that is still known for its history and culture.
