In 1970, it became a city. Harlingen is located in Brazoria County on the border of Harris County. It has a population of 47,521 as of the 2010 Census. In 1881, James A. Hardesty came to Texas with his family from Illinois and land he had purchased near Vandalia, Michigan. He opened a practice in what is now Harlingen with two assistants: Drs John Wirtz and Amos Kendall. The Hardestsy community grew quickly because they were able to provide good medical care at an affordable price for their patients. They also built a schoolhouse and began providing transportation to nearby towns. In 1902, they added another assistant—Dr George Jekyll—and continued expanding their practice until 1926 when Dr Jekyll retired due to health problems related to alcoholism. The hardworking Hardestsys left an lasting legacy on Harlingen by developing an innovative approach to dentistry that continues today: filling teeth with amalgam instead of traditional metal fillings so that fewer dental problems are associated with regular use over time; providing free dental exams for all residents; and establishing partnerships with other local businesses for special services such as car washes or lawn mowing/. In 1970, after years of growth in the community due to its innovation in dentistry and strong economic growth since becoming a city, Harlingen celebrated its 100th anniversary as a municipality by erecting a civic center honoring those who have made significant contributions thereto including Mayor Harry Weisenthal along with Mrs Martha Payne Webb (founder/director emeritus of Payne Webb Conservatory), Mr Forrest Hays (former CEO/president Baylor College Hospital), Ms Betty Ligon (founder/director San Antonio Zoo), Dr John Pfeffer (founder/director Stroudsburg University Hospital) & many more! The Harlingen community was established in 1871 when the railroad arrived and built a depot here. The town grew rapidly after the post office was moved to Harlingen from San Antonio in 1872. By 1900, Harlingen had a population of 4,000 and several businesses including a banks, grocery stores, and hotels. In 1912, the United States Postal Service moved its processing center from Austin to Harlingen and the town began to grow even more as letters were delivered here instead of going out of state. The postal service left in 1969 but some mail still arrives here today.
