Harlingen is a small town in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The Harlingen post office was established on March 15, 1865, and became operational on October 1 that same year. At the time it had a population of six residents. In 1872, the post office moved to its current location and first received mail from California. In 1928, Harlingen had a population of 2,500 and began to receive mail from England. The population peaked at 4,000 in 1960 before declining gradually over the next several decades until reaching 1,992 as of 2000. The decline can be partially attributed to suburbanization which led to less need for local services such as postal service in areas such as Harlingen Creek Valley where development has occurred since then. When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Harlingen, Texas, they were met with hostility. The area was then part of the Spanish Empire and was considered a waste of land. The Portuguese explorer Vicente de Ferrer landed here in 1541 and began to explore the area. In 1545 he discovered an oil well near present-day Harlingen and decided to settle here. He named the settlement after his own home town of Ferradouro, Portugal. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living west of San Antonio be killed by order of President Taylor. This event is known as the Santa Anna Massacre. The town started to grow quickly after it was designated a post office in 1839. It became an important rail junction due to its location on the Comal River and its easy access to supplies from New Mexico and Texas. The first school opened in 1840 and eventually many other businesses followed suit including a hotel, grocery store, bakery, saddlery shop, livery stable, bank and cotton gin. The town's growth continued until around 1915 when it had reached its peak population size with over 50 businesses still operating today! One year later it lost its status as a post office because of lack of mail service available from Harlingen proper!

Harling had owned land for many years before moving to Texas in 1881. The first school in the town was built on what is now known as Main Street. The town rapidly grew due to its natural resources and its location at the mouth of the Brazos River. In 1916, the townsite was annexed by Austin and renamed Austin-Harlingsville
