The townspeople of Harlingen fought hard for their independence from Mexico and eventually succeeded in achieving American sovereignty over their land. In 1859 they founded what would become known as the Republic of Texas; an independent country that lasted until 1861 when it merged into US territory once again following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. After World War II ended and America regained its former glory, many businesses migrated to Harlingen from all around the country due to booming economic opportunities during that time period. Many people also arrived during this time because they were fleeing Communism throughout Central and Eastern Europe which had begun to take hold in those areas shortly before then.
