Harker, who also founded the town in 1881. The first people to live in Harker Heights were white traders and settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived in 1881. They built log homes and started a gristmill that produced flour for local merchants. In 1901, the first post office was established in Harker Heights. The community grew rapidly with the arrival of railroad passengers on the Texaco Railway Extension Service from Dallas to Galveston. By 1910, Harker Heights had a school, library, clinic and two churches. In 1915, Jock Mahoney opened his general store in what is now known as Mahoney Plaza Shopping Center (later renamed Parkland Place). This business became one of the most successful in South Texas due to its wide variety of merchandise including groceries, hardware and appliances, clothing and tobacco products. Mahoney's Store remain open today as an antique store/mall with more than 20 stores across six states located within walking distance of their original location on I-10 near Loop 610 East (now part of I-30). In 1969, David Beattie opened Beattie's BBQ restaurant which became one of South Texas' most popular restaurants during its early years.
