Harker Heights was founded in 1872 and named for Major General Jesse Harker, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as commander of Fort Worth's First battalion of Rangers. In 1902, Harker Heights became a town when it merged with other smaller towns in Hockley County. The first post office was established in 1903. The industry that has made Harker Heights one of the most prosperous communities in Texas began to take hold after World War II when oil discoveries were made off the coast of Texas by companies such as Texaco and Shell Oil Company. In 1969, Texaco withdrew from the oil business, leaving Harker Heights without an economic staple to support its Residents had long contended that they should have been given control over their own destiny - this led to protests against what they saw as government paternalism which would only benefit those living near major highways and universities; these protests eventually turned into a movement known as "The People's revolt". In 1984, voters passed an ordinance allowing homebuilders to build homes on private property within 500 feet of any public school or park if those homes were used for affordable housing rather than being sold as single family detached dwellings (SDFs). A small park was also developed in the area around this time; it is still used today as Parkland Park. In 1912, when oil exploded on an offshore platform off Texas coast killing more than 100 people and disabling many more for months or even years afterwards, locals immediately began searching for a solution to prevent further damage from occurring. They organized a committee which eventually came up with the idea of building an oil wellhead at Point Convict about one mile away from where present-day Harker Heights sits. This wellhead would serve as both storage for crude oil and as a source of emergency energy should any other issues arise with the local oil production plants nearby.
