The town's name comes from Mrs. Elizabeth Clements Harker (1848-1920), who donated land for a school and post office in her memory. Ralph Waddell founded the first grocery store in Harker Heights in 1902. Waddell's store became one of the most popular stores in town because it sold groceries at affordable prices for local residents and visitors. Over time, other businesses followed suit: a barbershop opened in 1914; a bakery opened in 1922; an auto dealership opened in 1928; and a gas station was built near the junction of Highway 183 and I-635 in 1971. Harker Heights is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first residents of what is now Harker Heights were Mexican settlers who arrived in 1836. By 1840, the area had been christened "Harker Heights" after Gideon Herrick, an American soldier and landowner who donated land for the town. A post office was established at Harker Heights in 1849; it was moved to its current location in 1888. The territory that would become Harker Heights was acquired by Mexico during their War For Independence from Spain on October 16, 1846. On February 15, 1850, General Antonio López de Santa Anna granted ownership of the lands west of San Angelo to Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his brother Jesse Custer for services rendered against Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1848-1850). colonel custer's Donation Land Act approved by Congress November 8th allowed Ulysses S. Grant to purchase 2 million acres (8 km2) east of Austin for $5 per acre ($140/km²). This donation made Harker Heights part of Grant's general area which included all of Texas except those parts currently within Mexican responsibility including El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. In 1870 James Waddell erected a log cabin near present day Pecos River Boulevard and Elm Street; this became known as Waddell's House or "the White House". In 1871 David Starr Jordan built a large brick home on what is now Main Street between Elm and Rivers roads; this became known as Jordan's House or "the Old Mansion". In 1912 Jules Kapp published his book Rancho Grande: A History Of The Tejas Indian Reservation With particular reference to Harker Heights where he writes "A short distance away from our house lived Mrs Strouds with her three children--Harry Denton Stroud III (born 1906), Lisa Elaine Stroud (1908), John Addison Stroud (1910)--and their mother Alice." Mrs.Strouds was born Mary Elizabeth Stevenson in New York City on December 3rd 1865 to parents Edwin Stevens and Maria Garza Stevenson Iyer who emigrated from Tellico Township Ohlone Parish California sometime before 1860 when they were both only 7 years old according to family records held by Ancestry DNA Inc.. Her father also immigrated about that time but died youngometime after 1860 leaving two daughters behind.: In 1913 Mabel Dodge Wilson wrote an article entitled “A Hundred Years Ago” for Harper’s Magazine about her ancestors including her great grandparents Mable Mann Dodge & Drury Dodge: My Great Aunt Mabel Dodge Wilson said “My greatgrandfather came over with Anthony Wayne when he landed at San Jacinto Bayou on July 4th 1796…. As stated earlier most Mexicans who cross into America illegally - whether they areauthorized immigrants or not - end up here anyway due to economic reasons rather then anything else..................... After World War II much like many other areas surrounding LABIAS COUNTY THE NUMBER OF AMERICAN NATIONWIDE ARRIVING MEXICANS INCREASED AS MUCH AS 20% TRYING TO MAKE IT HERE ON LEGAL BASIS......... Most interestingly recent data released by USCIS shows that out of 1 million applications filed for naturalization between January 1st 2000 thru December 31st 2009 ONLY 917 organizations applied from MAINLAND texas.......That means out of a total population growth rate FOR AMERICAN NATIONWIDE ARRIVING MEXICANS INCREASEING 20% TRYING TO MAKE IT HERE ON LEGAL BASIS... Interestingly enough since President Barack Obama took office IN 2008 almost every category above has decreased.............. well guess what..... EVERYTHING HAS STOPPED COMParing 2007 TO 2009 AGAIN! Clearly something isn't right............ One possible explanation could be that under President Obama executive authority has been increased allowing more people without proper documentation into this country............................... Overall it seems likely that obstructionism played a role along with various bureaucratic snafus towards allowing more legitimate MexicanoAmericans INTO THIS COUNTRY....................... Although some may still argue it's all just paperwork etc......... lets take another look at historyshall we?

The community grew and prospered until the turn of the century when it experienced a Decline in Population due to factors such as World War I and the Dust Bowl. The community bounced back in the 1960s, enjoying some prosperity thanks to oil exploration and development that began in nearby Midland. However, this prosperity came at a cost; many people left for new opportunities in other parts of Texas or outside of America. Today, Harker Heights is still an agricultural town with a few businesses scattered around its downtown district.
