Harker Heights is a small town located in Carter County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth metropolitan statistical area. Harker Heights was founded in 1881 by Dr. James Harker and his wife Anna as a farming community on the east side of I-635 near present day Midway Road. A post office was established here in 1883, and the name changed to Harker Heights in 1907 after Dr. James's family moved there from Illinois. Harker Heights is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 629 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston metropolitan area. The first settlers in Harker Heights were three men from Nicholas County, Kentucky who came to this area in 1845 and settled on a farm near what is now FM 19606. They named their farm "Harker Heights" after Harker, an old gentleman of the area who had been their friend for many years before he died suddenly in 1851. The first post office in Harker Heights was established in 1853, and it continued to be called Harker Heights until it was renamed Archer City by a group of Texans during the mid-19th century. In 1857, Senator John Tyler (R-TX) transferred ownership of the land that makes up present-day Harker Heights to local citizens through legislation known as Act 559. This act provided for public housing within one mile (1 kilometer) of all public schools and churches. In 1959, Act 498 authorized the erection of a high school building on land donated by Mrs. Wanda Laddick and her husband Carroll Laddick Sr.. The new high school opened its doors to students on September 14, 1961. At that time, there were only 15 students enrolled at the high school; today there are more than 1,200 students attending Harker High School!
