In 1925, boundary changes spelled trouble for Harker Heights because most of its land lay within Richardson County (which then included much of central TX) while Johnson County (containing only eastern TX) retained responsibility for mail service and other civic functions within its own boundaries. To solve this problem and avoid duplication of services, Richardson County erected a new county courthouse (now known as Richardson Hall) on Main Street in 1924 and opened an annex east of it that served as theVillage Hall until 1960 when that building also burned down; replacement structures were constructed both north and south of where Main Street meets Interstate Highway 10 (US 90). Although not exactly contiguous with either side of town - they were close to each other but separated by farmland - these two buildings formed what is now called "Middle Town". vernacular architecture characterized much of early 20th century rural US East Texas including Harker Heights: wide doorsteps leading into tidy white clapboard homes with red siding and green trim; gables crowned with weatherboard or shingled roofs crowned with matching chimneys; wide plank sidewalks flanked by neatly trimmed hedges; well-manicured gardens fronting large rectangular lawns edged by tall English elms or live oaks trees.; One such example can be seen at 6 E 15th St., which features Queen Anne style brick architecture dating from c 1830 It wasn't until after World War II that many new housing developments started appearing in response to rapid growth in population throughout Johnson County - one such development being Hickory Hills which began popping up around 1950 near I-10 & FM 620 intersection outside city limits
