On November 6, 1881, Harker Heights residents John G. Harker and wife Emma P. Harker organized a rifle club in order to protect their town from outlaws. The club held meetings monthly and fired rifles at targets near the local quarry. On March 5, 1882, the club formalized its name as the "Harker Heights Rifle Club." The first shooting match was held on April 15, 1882. At this event, 12 members of the club shot at a target outdoors in front of the home of Wm. A. Bigham. The results were poor, with only three shots hitting their mark; all six shooters finished with wounds that required medical attention. In 1886, an ordinance was passed forbidding any person under 21 years old from owning or carrying a revolver without a license from a responsible adult.(1) This ordinance effectively stopped handgun ownership by young people in Harker Heights for many years to come. However, gun violence did not stop until after World War II when restrictions on handguns were lifted under pressure from Congress.(2) Today, Harker Heights is one of few towns in Texas that still has gun regulations in place that date back to before the NRA ever came into existence.(3)

It is the only city in Williamson County and its smaller town of Harker Heights forms an enclave within the larger city. Harker Heights was founded in 1879 by John Harker and his family as a farming community on the banks of the Neches River. In 1915, Harker Heights became part of Dallas and annexed portions of neighboring Richardson Township. The current incarnation of Harker Heights began to form in the early 1960s when local residents decided to move away from Dallas after experiencing high levels of crime and traffic congestion. The original downtown district — which still contains many historic buildings — served as a vibrant retail center for residents until it was destroyed by fire in 2002. The rebirth of Harker Heights began with the construction of two new municipal buildings: One was designed by architect Freeman Martin and built in 1962; it serves as City Hall, while the other is used today as Town Hall. At that time, Mayor Donny Young announced plans for development that would create more than 2,000 jobs over five years throughout downtown area; this plan ultimately failed due to opposition from some who felt that increased traffic would ruin their businesses. However, since then, efforts have been made to regenerate downtown into what it once was - including installation of a new light rail system that will serve Harker Heights and its neighbouring townsfolk directly beginning in 2020 - making it one of Texas' newest cities. In recent years there has also been discussion about annexing portions of neighboring Richardson Township so that all citizens can live closer to work opportunities without having to leave their homes or neighborhoods (though no final decisions have yet been made). This proposal has received some support from elected officials within both townships but has yet to be realized due to objections from those who feel they are being encroached upon by larger municipalities without proper consideration given to their concerns.

The first European to visit what is now Harker Heights was José de Ávila in 1795. He named it "Chávez" after his friend and mentor Antonio Chávez y Correggio. A post office called Chavez was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1911 the Lubbock–Harker Oil Company drilled a well in what is now Harker Heights and began producing oilThere were initial plans to name the town Harker Heights after Lubbock's mayor John Pemberton, but this plan failed to gain support from residents due to fears that the town would become associated with Houston too closely. In 1916 an east-west street split off of Main Street in order to avoid confusion with nearby Houston Streets Annunciation Drive and Sabine Street which had been renamed for then-President Woodrow Wilson following his visit there two years earlier. A gas station/ convenience store was built on US 71 north of present day intersection of I-35E and FM 1492 about 1955 by Texaco Incorporated as part of its drive through strategy for expanding into new markets outside its original Texas strongholds such as Dallas and Wichita Falls (then known as Eagle Pass). The building still stands today across from I-35E exit 190 near Beltline Road just south of Interstate 35E) adjacent to TX 183 pull out ramp providing access eastbound on I-35E from Loop 610 South while westbound traffic uses TX 183 pull out ramp directly north of current facility operated by Lone Star Family Services Inc., currently being used as an overflow lot for local students attending Williamson County schools during lunchtime when classes are not offered at schoolsite; presently we have 6 cars parked here most days! It should be noted that this early gas station does not appear to have been preserved or even visited since its closure - all evidence suggests it has been demolished or removed over time
The town of Harker Heights was founded in 1881 by J.N. Harker, a local rancher and landowner. The name is derived from the Cherokee word "hara" meaning "place where there is water." The town grew quickly, and by 1886 it had a population of 350 residents. In 1898, the Texas Railroad Company built a line to Houston, and Harker Heights became an important stop on the trip. By 1912, the town had grown to 1,000 residents and was home to a school, library, post office, and two banks. In 1915, the Post Office moved from its original location to what is now the downtown area of Harker Heights. In 1920-21, Harker Heights hosted the Republican National Convention which nominated Governor James Kenedy for president. After Kenedy's election victory in November 1921, he donated land near downtown to create the first campus of Rice University in Houston. The city hall building was also constructed at this time. After World War II ended in 1945, many Americans left Texas for various reasons including jobs in northern California or Oregon; however, many people remained behind to help rebuild postwar America. In 1951-52 when construction began on Interstate 10 across eastern Texas (the first interstate route ever constructed in that state), Harker Heights played an instrumental role in helping support the project as well as helping make possible Texans who would go on to play significant roles in shaping American culture during that era such as Lee Atwater and Edwin Meese III. Harker Heights experienced some growth again during the 1990s but has since been steadily declining since then with only about 100 residents remaining today among an estimated 2-3 thousand people who lived here prior to 1900s Median age: 66 years
