Harker Heights is a small town located in the Texas Panhandle. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of Midland County. The first white person to live in Harker Heights was John Harker, who arrived in 1836. A post office called Harker Heights was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The community's name may be derived from John's brother-in-law, George Harker, Sr., who bought land around the town site and laid out streets and built houses. Harker Heights became a city on November 3, 1907 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Burlington and Mayberry. In 1910, voters approved a $15 million bond issue to build a new public library, which opened its doors on October 14, 1912. The original library building still stands today as one of the most popular tourist attractions in town. In 1920s and 1930s Harker Heights saw an influx of German immigrants who founded businesses such as grocery stores and breweries. At that time there were only two schools – one for children and one for adults – within the boundaries of town limits. Harker Heights is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,588 at the 2010 census. The community was named for Harker Cattle and Horses Ranch, which was located here until it sold in 1907 to J.B. Harker. The first residents of Harker Heights were Scots-born pioneers who arrived around 1885 when a group of settlers from Scotland set up a ranch near present-day Slaughtertown and began trading goods with Indians and Mexicans on the Llano River. In 1902, the rancher John Sledge purchased the property that makes up today's Harker Heights from J.B. Harker for $2,000 cash and 10 acres of land irrigated with water power from an abandoned mine in nearby Clear Fork Creek. From then on, the name "Harker Heights" indicated both their ownership of the land as well as their status as residents within Williamson County - until 1959 when it became part of Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex boundaries. The early years of settlement were difficult due to harsh weather conditions and lack of resources; however, by 1906 there were over 100 people living in Harker Heights along with four schools and two churches (the first being organized into a society in 1903). After World War I ended and new opportunities opened up throughout Texas including jobs in oil fields outside Houston, many people moved into Harker Heights including some who had settled there during the 1880s such as Alexander McNaughtie and his family who had bought land near present day Slaughtertown after emigrating from Edinburgh, Scotland overlanders three years earlier.
