By 1910, Harker Heights had reached a population of 2,000 people. During World War I, the town was occupied by American forces as they prepared for battle in Europe.Harker Heights experienced some growth during the late 1990s as a result of development around State Highway 183 (SH 183). This highway provides access to nearby cities and towns, making it an important corridor for transportation in the region. In 2001, SH 183 was designated Texas's Highest Priority Corridor for Transportation Development.Since then, Harker Heights has seen significant growth with new businesses opening up and residents moving into the community. Work is ongoing to increase access to public transportation in the area through updates to SH 183 and plans for a light rail system that will connect Harker Heights with neighboring communities.
On July 6, 1881, the village of Harker Heights was organized by a group of farmers who had come to the area to improve their herds of cattle. The first post office in the village was established on this date. A school was also opened in Harker Heights in 1882. The town grew rapidly and by 1886 there were 10 businesses in the community. In 1892, a sawmill was established and soon became one of the most important economic engines in Harker Heights. By 1910, there were 28 businesses in the community and it had a population of over 500 people. The cotton industry declined during World War I but continued to grow after the war when new mills were built. In 1930, Harker Heights had a population of 1,500 people and began developing into an important industrial center with heavy manufacturing capabilities. The economy slowly collapsed during World War II as production shifted to other countries but resumed growth following the end of hostilities. During the late 1960s and early 1970s,Harker Heights experienced major demographic change as more young people moved into the community from outlying areas for housing reasons or because they decided to move back to their hometowns after growing up elsewhere. This shift led to increased commercial activity and better transportation options which helped support larger families during this time period. In recent years, however,Harker Heights has been experiencing rapid gentrification which is resulting in loss of jobs and homes for many residents
