Harker Heights is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. It is located on the border of Medina and Hidalgo Counties and has a population of just over 1100 people. The name "Harker Heights" was given to the town by A.J. Harker after he died in an accident near the town in 1892. The community was platted in 1865 by Jno. Ladd, who named it after his brother-in-law, Harker Hayden, who had moved from Illinois to Medina County two years earlier. The first post office was established at Harker Heights on December 26, 1865, by Ephraim Witherspoon. The first settler in Harker Heights was John Prentice, who arrived in 1867. He built a log cabin on the east side of High Street and named it Prentice's Depot after himself and his brother-in-law Jabez Prentice (1825–1910). In 1870 David Fenton arrived from Missouri with his family and set up a farm nearby on West Main Street before buying land adjoining Prentice's depot for $5 per acre ($100 current value). He called his new venture Fenton's Grove which evolved into what is now known as Harker Heights Park today. Fenton operated a stagecoach station out of his house until October 1880 when he sold all operations to Jesse Sprague Sr., also from Missouri; Sprague ran the station until it burned down in 1910 while being used as an ammunition dump during World War I northeast of town; subsequent efforts have failed to resurrect the property or bring it back under agriculture control so that it could be preserved for future generations. As early as 1884 James Southerland had started trading goods along State Road 6 about five miles northeast of town near present day FM 19606; this road became main traffic artery between Medina County and Starr County during those days carrying goods both ways with occasional passenger trains running between Corpus Christi and Mexico City en route to Laredo Crossing where they would be unloaded at the Mexican port of Veracruz before continuing northbound on their way back across the border to Dallas or Houston via Galveston or Brownsville respectively In 1887 James Garland formed a partnership with George Witherspoon & Co., traders operating out of what is now Springtown south of town; Garlandadeddicated business activities to Springtown following Witherspoon’s death in 1889 James Garland acquired 2nd place claim on Rancho San Marcos de las Flores (now part of Hanna) east of Town limits dated November 10th 1886 from Francisco Hernandez – grantor’s uncle - for $2/acre (.75 current value) . This ranch passed through various hands including Churchill Darnell & Co.; finally coming into our possession thru Zenaida Hernandez de la Garza (nee Chavez) thru her daughter Amanda Berry .amanda Berry may have been born there around this time too since she has some genetic characteristics that match that description

Harker Heights is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Harker Creek, which flows through the town. The town was founded in 1875 by John Harker and his brothers-in-law Amos and David Dixon. It was named after General James Harker of the Union army, who had fought in the Mexican–American War. In 1902, the townsite was renamed for Edwin Laddington Harker Jr., an early settler and rancher in Johnson County. Harker Heights experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to Dallas and its large Boeing plant. The war led to increased military presence in the area and production of aircraft at the plant increased from 2,000 units per year in 1940 to 30,000 units by 1945. The plant closed in 1998 but remain a contributing factor to Harker Heights' current economy.
