Harker Heights is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth– Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Harker Heights was James Harker who came to the area in 1872. In 1902, John A. McMahon built a homestead on what is now Payne Boulevard and Harker Road. The town name was chosen by referendum in 1923 when it was proposed that all localities be called "Harker Heights". The post office opened in 1924 and continued operation until it closed on July 1, 1969. Harker Heights has one school which serves grades Pre-K through 12th grade: Hogan Middle School (grades K-5). There are also two churches – First Baptist Church and Christ Presbyterian Church – which provide chapel services for residents as well as playschools for pre-kindergarten through 4th grade students during the weekdays and overnight programs for fifth through eighth graders during the weekends. There are also several businesses located throughout the community including two banks (Hogan National Bank & Trust Co., Incorporated) as well as several manufacturing businesses such as Home Depot, Lowe's, JCPenney and Sears Roebuck&Co., among others In addition to its small grocery store (The Gourmet Shop), there are several convenience stores within walking distance including 7-Eleven and IGA supermarkets; however, Highway 59 provides most of their sales activity with gas stations being less common due to competition from Walmart . There is also a post office annex located inside of Hogan Middle School which offers mail service to other nearby towns such as Plano and Irvington . Residents can also receive package delivery from various companies either via USPS or DHL . According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Harker Heights had a total population of 912 . As of 2010 its population had increased to 1,811 making it one of Tarrant County's fastest growing communities since 2000 while still maintaining its rural feel

In 1984, the City Council voted to rename the city after Eunice Kennedy Shriver, wife of Ulysses S. Grant Shriver, making her first visit to Fort Worth as Mayor of Boston when she was also named Advisor for Urban Affairs on behalf of President Ronald Reagan’s Task Force on Inner-City Communities. In 2001, following Hurricane Katrina, much damage had been done to both the downtown business district and parts of eastern Harker Heights which were still recovering from that event some years earlier. However, it quickly emerged that much more could be done with less than two months time given available resources including significant donations by local businesses led by IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad who donated $500 million for reconstruction efforts within New Orleans after Katrina disaster struck there so that similar initiatives could be undertaken statewide across America’s Deep South region affected by Hurricanes Rita and Wilma
The first Harker Heights, Texas post office was established in 1857. The town was named for General John Harker, who fought in the Mexican-American War as a brigade commander. The first post office operated out of a house on Fourth Street. In 1874, the original building on Main Street was purchased by the Postmaster General and enlarged to its present size. The city hall and other government buildings were completed in 1906.
