A total of 48 people were killed or missing as a result of Hurricane 1907-1908. In fact many consider Hurricane 1907-1908 to be one of the worst natural disasters in history due to its destructive power and widespread destruction across multiple areas especially within HOUSTON county In 1908 there was also another devastating tornado outbreak which affected parts ofHouston on August 29th & 30th 1908 killing 433 people out of 994 injuries reported . The first houses were built in what is now the east side of town; today those houses are still standing but have been moved out of line with the rest of the townspeople’s homes to form part of a park that sits on top of an old sugar refinery that was once located near where Main Street intersects Broadway. The first settlers in Harker Heights, Texas were Jesse and Nancy Harker. They came to the area in 1851 and started a small farm. In 1865, they married Sarah Richardson. The couple founded the Richardson School which is still in operation today. In 1881, they had their first child and named him after their father, Jesse Richardson Jr.
