Harker Heights is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,394 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Harker Heights was founded in 1879 by John Harker and his family. The first post office in Harker Heights opened in 1881. The town name comes from William Fenton's book "A Topographical Dictionary of Kansas," which included a description of an event which took place near present-day Harker Heights: "In 1879, John Harker and his family located their new home about two miles west of Wichita Falls on the banks of Buffalo Creek. They named their new settlement 'Harker Heights' after William Fenton's "Topographical Dictionary of Kansas." In 1907, Mrs. Ethel A Stroud (née Burnett) donated much land to the town for public use and development; this land now includes most of downtown Harker Heights." As early as 1888, residents were planning to build a school site just east of the creek where they currently live. In 1890, a group led by Wm J Grow began purchasing property east of Buffalo Creek for $2 per acre between First Street and Third Street; construction began on what would become Giddings School District No. 4 today in 1893. By 1897 there were over 100 buildings erected in what is now downtown Harker Heights - one-half mile north along First Street from where Giddings School District No. 4 stands today... On October 15th [1897], citizens marched from Giddings School District No 5 to Cherry Grove Baptist Church four blocks away to demand that education be given to all children regardless of social standing or economic background... ensuing discussions resulted in passage by both chambers [of the Texas Legislature] on November 3rd [1897] establishing 'HARKER HEIGHTS TOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT #4' with Mrs Ethel A Stroud as its first Superintendent." On December 8th [1907], voters approved a bond issue ($2700) ratcheting up taxes necessary for construction associated with building an all-weather playground south side lot adjoining Second Avenue between Main and Elm Streets; construction began that same year which continues to this day (August 29th 2019)... On March 10th 1909 (the date carved into stone within memory walls at Giddings Park), citizens traveled 2 ½ miles south from their original location just east off First Street leading up Cemetery Hill Drive & passing through historic Springdale Cemetery before descending back down towards First Street picnic areas complete with restrooms/showers/feeding ground across busy Main Street sidewalks without incident resulting in large turnout more than doubling park size since initial opening celebrationESSENCE OF THE DAY!... Today marks 125 years since our community formed & we continue living our Values through hard work ethic!, dedication & love for each other!"

The first settler in Harker Heights was David Harker who arrived in 1867. His son John Harker also settled there and his grandson John W. Harker founded the company that became Consolidated Gas Corporation. In 1912, George Waddell incorporated the town of Harker Heights as a municipal corporation with a population of 350 people. In 1951, the United States Post Office moved from its original location two miles east of downtown to what is now Main Street in downtown Harker Heights for more efficient postal service and newtown growth which included many apartment buildings and high-rise housing developments such as Red Roofs Plaza and Embassy Towers II. Over time many businesses have opened up including restaurants, convenience stores, banks (including First National Bank), health clinics and even an amusement park! In recent years much progress has been made with redevelopment efforts around downtown like Bluebonnet Boulevard which features several trendy restaurants/bars/cafes along with large Formatx store(s) on one side while another side hosts several parks/grounds/walkways including Home Depot Park & Community Center on Elm Street just east of I-10; Crossroads Trails Park & Recreation Area to the south; KFC Country Club across Elm Street from Starbucks; additional retail areas are under construction or planned including Anheuser Busch Brewery Field House project to be located near I-10 Exit 359 (Haggerty Road), River North Mall redevelopment Plan - beginning near I-10 exit 521 east of Walmart - anchored by JCPenney within walking distance; numerous residential projects are proposed or underway throughout Downtown El Paso including new single family homes being developed by CBRE Property Management LLC.; and plans continue for development of both apartments and condos starting in earnest soon adjacent to Disney's Hollywood Studios Resort though no final decisions have been made yet
