He also bought some land near where Harkerville now stands for $10 per acre ($ today). In 1852, James sold his land to seven other settlers: Rufus Silliman, Ebenezer Sellers, Denton Smith, Solomon Searles, Augustus Beal and Isaac Morse. In 1861 when Texas became a state under the new U.S. Constitution it lost its slave trade status which made it difficult for slaveholders to keep their slaves in Texas without running into legal troubles or becoming free themselves. The name "Harker Heights" comes from Harker County, Kansas. In 1912, the railroad built a depot here and named it after Harker Heights, Kansas. The town first became an agricultural center and had a few stores and a post office until the late 1800s when things changed with the development of oil fields in nearby Midland. Manufacturing began to take off in the early 1900s with builders beginning to build homes along Loop 410 (now I-10). This growth spurt also led to new businesses such as a hotel, grocery store, bank and bakery. The population peaked around 1920 with over 2,000 people living there. However, during World War II many residents served in the military so there were no major changes until after that war when things started to decline again due to economic conditions throughout much of America following World War I which caused high unemployment rates among veterans returning home from Europe & Asia. However, since 2000 things have begun to turnaround as more jobs have been available for those working in technology & other leading industries while still maintaining close ties with their farming roots which has kept the community intact since then as well as adding some new aspects including arts and music festivals each year throughout summertime

In 1871, the town was renamed Austin after James Austin, the president of Texas in that year. The population of Harker Heights grew rapidly after annexation by Austin in 1911. By 1925, the population had reached 10,000 people. On November 6th, 1941, Japanese bombers bombed Pearl Harbor and killed more than 2,500 Americans including many residents of Harker Heights.
