The company started producing rifles and shotguns using plastic ammunition but eventually switched to aluminum alloy rounds for their guns. In 1975, Harry Ewing passed away and his sons took over the business as ownersofHarker Arms Corporation (HAIC). HAIC became a major producer of quality firearms products throughout America until its sale to Chiappa Firearms Incorporated (CFI) in 1995. After CFI's ownership changeover, HAIC ceased production altogether due to financial problems; however some high-quality guns still remain in inventory today!

The town was named for General James Fenton Harker, an American general and prophet who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The town was founded on a farm that was part of the Rancho San Antonio grant given to José Angel María Morelos by Mexico. The grant ran from Medina County to San Antonio County. In 1848, President George Washington Polk signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War and ceded most of Texas to Mexico. The land parcel that included what is now Harker Heights was part of this treaty. After annexation by the United States in 1845, Harker Heights became part of Houston Municipal District No. 1.
