The name "Haltom" comes from Haltom Creek which flows through town. The first settlement at Haltom City was made by John Wesley Hardin in 1836. The current community was founded by James Fenton in 1881. The history of Haltom City begins with two men: John Wesley Hardin and James Fenton. It can be said that these two individuals were responsible for helping to start what would become Haltom City. Hardin came toTexas with his family from Kentucky during the Mexican–American War in 1846 and he soon realized that there was a need for settlers in this new landowner’s colony. He started out by buying some land northwest of present day downtown Haltom City from David Wells and began construction on his home, known as “The First House”, on October 15th, 1836! Fenton also decided to come toTexas during this time period and he arrived at San Antonio on November 10th, 1836! He began working on building his own home but unfortunately it caught fire before he could finish it! However, this did not stop him from continuing his journey westward; instead, he set up shop inside an old adobe buildings called “The Second House” right across from where “The First House” currently stands! Both men were incredibly motivated to start a new life and they knew that this town would have to be great if it ever wanted to get off the ground! They did everything they could to make sure their town became successful; they hired local builders, built roads and bridges (including one crossing the Llano River), created businesses such as a post office (1836), grocery store (1839) and even constructed their own jail (1841)! It wasn't until 1850 though that things really started looking up for Haltom City! On July 14th of that year, County Judge A G Johnson received word back east about an impending drought originating near Fort Worth so he ordered all water sources within 3 miles of his courthouse turned off!! This caused quite a stir within Utopia because Judge Johnson had always been considered one of our most influential officials! After hearing about this turn of events, John Wesley Hardin decided to walk into town hall barefoot just so everyone would know who controls our water resources now!!! In spite of all these challenges though – including tough competition from other towns nearby – HaltOM CITY continued growing steadily throughout the 1840s & 50s due mostly to its key role as an agricultural center!! In 1860 however things changed when Confederate troops invaded America duringthe American Civil War!!! Although hard fought against numerically speaking(the Confederacy lost over 500 battles vs Union forces combined!), Houston eventually capitulated due mainly To financial reasons!!! With Houston gone & Utopia under Federal control……..HALTOM CITY slowly slipped into obscurity………………………………….. However starting around 1870 things picked up again & within 10 years or so both main streets had been re-purposed as business streets…………………………………. By 1940 however things had really taken off & since then growth has only continued………………….. When World War II ended hostilities had finished raging throughout mostof Europe (& many countries still experienced rationing/starvation)& people return'd home etc., but production stopped immediately because there weren't any markets yet for products produced elsewhere………………………………….. As technology advanced throughout this era various companies moved into downtown areas such as AT&T (1947), ExxonMobil (1948), Texaco Phillips Chemical Co.(1950)Texaco Midland Refining Company Inc.(1951)), Western Electric Corporation(1957)) etc............. In 1990 TXU established UTEP here locally................. By 2000 UTEP's campus expanded beyond surrounding neighborhoods................... In 2001 Hobby Lobby opened here............................... In 2002 Sam's Club opened here.................. Today much more activity takes place.......................................
