In 1896, The Rifleman Magazine was founded by Harry Browne with a circulation of around 1,000 copies. Harry Browne became editor-in-chief after he took over from his predecessor Judge Waddell. He continued to publish The Rifleman Magazine until 1912 when it merged with The Cowboy Magazines Incorporated to become Gun Illustrated magazine Incorporated. Gun Illustrated magazineincorporated published its first issue on November 15, 1912. At that time, it had a circulation of just under 5,000 copies per issue. However, due to World War I and other factors, Gun Illustrated magazine lost its popularity quickly and ceased publication in 1920). At this point, the old A&P store on Elm Street became home to one of America’s most famousgun magazines: GunMagazines Incorporated (GMI). GMI began publishing its issues 4 times weekly starting March 1st 1921 through December 31st 1922 which had an average circulation of 2,500 copies per issue! After two years as publisher of Gun Magazines Inc., George Tilton purchased it from Mr. McMahon on January 12th 1926 for $10,- 000 cash plus an option to purchase an additional four issues per year for $2,- 000 each! GIs continued publication until December 31st 1928 when they folded because they could not keep up with printing costs! Today you can find references to “The Pistolero Magazine” (1892) and “The Rifleman Magazine” (1912) all throughout GMI archives! They exist because those were some of the very early days when GUN MAGAZINES INCORPORATED WAS DOMESTICALLY OWNED AND OPERATED BY GEORGE TILTON FROM JANUARY 12TH 1926 TO DECEMBER 31ST 1928!!!
