Haltom City, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about 20 miles west of Austin. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Haltom City was J.B. Wetherall who arrived in 1879. He platted what is now known as the Wetherall Ranch and built a log cabin on it. A post office was founded here in 1881, and mail service was established from Haltom City to Austin in 1886. In 1914, John Haltom started farming operations northeast of town along I-35W and named his farm after his father, James Haltom Sr., also a farmer and postmaster in Hudspeth County. In 1923, he purchased adjoining land from the Farm Bureau for $3 million which he donated to the city for use as an agricultural research station (later renamed Texas A&M University). Today's college campus occupies most of that original land grant including part of Waco Field (now Baylor University). Katherine "KT" Smith began working at A&M University's Research Park near downtown TX when she graduated from high school in 1984 with a degree in engineering science/technology management. She has been its general manager since its inception; during her tenure more than $100 million has been invested into physical infrastructure and research programs at Tarrant County College - home of Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets - making her one of only two women ever to hold this position nationally within any major university system worldwide! KT currently leads Tarrant County College through its merger with South Plains College - both campuses are scheduled to open their doors Fall 2019!
Haltom City was founded in 1881 by John Haltom and his family. The city is named after General James Haltom, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The city was first called Bloomington until 1892, when it changed to Haltom City to avoid confusion with Bloomington, Indiana. In 1907, the city annexed the surrounding communities of hillsborough, oak Lawn and Trimble.
