In 1957, the city annexed nearby Slaughtertown and formed Slaughtertown-Haltom City Annexation Incorporated to continue to manage these annexed areas as one municipality. During Hurricane Katrina on August 29–30, 2005, much of the downtown area within the annexation boundaries lost all or most of its roofing and other framing due to flooding from approaching hurricanes Isaac and Rita; this included approximately two-thirds of all homes in that part of town (approximately 10% of all housing in San Antonio). As a result of damage done during Katrina and many years since then by storms such as Harvey (2005), severe looting has characterized much of downtown Haltom City following some large fires that have occurred there as well (e.g., The Alamo). In 1909 Haltom City became an incorporated municipality with a population of 25,000. The city experienced hard times during World War II due to its proximity to Mexico and its lack of defenses against air attack. However, after the war Haltom City regained its status as a major cultural and commercial center for the region. Today, Haltom City remains an important agricultural center with a population of about 33,000; it also has a number of tourist attractions including two theme parks and several golf courses
Haltom City was founded in 1881 by James A. Haltom and his brother, John Haltom. The city's name is a corruption of the Spanish word "hacienda" meaning "farm." The brothers were entrepreneurs who developed a horse-drawn wagon transportation system that allowed goods to be shipped quickly and easily from Texas' southern Plains to northern cities. In 1887, they partnered with J.D. Rockefeller to establish the Houston & Texas Central Railroad. The railroad became one of the most important lines in Texan history, providing connections betweenHouston and Dallas and helping to spur economic development in the region. In 1903, James A. Haltom died and his brother John took over management of the company; John later served as mayor of Haltom City from 1924 until his death in 1951.
