The history of the firearms industry in Haltom City, Texas can be traced back to 1881. At that time, the town was known as a center for rifle and shotgun manufacture. The first firearm factory in Haltom City was built by brothers George and John Mescher, who operated it from their home on Third Street. From these beginnings, the Meschers helped create what is now one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America. Over the years, other individuals and businesses have joined the company, culminating in its current form: Smith & Wesson Corporation. In 1914, Haltom City became an annex of Dallas and continued to produce arms until 1951 when it was merged into the larger city. In that year, gun control legislation was passed in Texas and Smith & Wesson ceased production within days of enactment. Today, only a few remnants of this early industry remain within Haltom City proper - most notably the Meschers’ home on Third Street where today you can still find rifles and shotguns made by them over 100 years ago.

The town was founded by John Haltom in 1879 as a small farming community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. In 1902, Haltom City became an independent municipality with its own government and school district. The first industry in Haltom City was agriculture; however, over time it has become an important center for trade and commerce in Tom Green County. The most significant economic activity today occurs within the city limits: professional services such as law enforcement and accounting; manufacturing including textiles, plastics, shoes, truck tires and other equipment; transportation services including trucking (local bus transportation), airport service (local airline service), mining ( quarries providing stone for buildings) and agricultural production (primarily cotton). Today's downtown section of Haltom City began to be developed following World War II when local businesses came to realize that business growth could be achieved through development within the confines of municipal boundaries. The present-day downtown area includes much of what was once residential property along Buffalo Bayou - many homes were built after World War II while others were added during subsequent redevelopment efforts which continue to this day. Most notable are several large office complexes located near Interstate 10 - one being called "the Factory" which contains five stories of high-rise employment space overlooking Buffalo Bayou - as well as several shopping malls which have made Haltom City one of the top destinations for retail shopping in Greater Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex

Haltom City is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was founded on November 1, 1871 by James Haltom and his brother Lorenzo Haltom as a trading post on the banks of the Colorado River. The name "Haltom" was derived from a nearby mountain range. The Haltoms opened their trading post near what is now downtown Austin on November 1, 1871. The brothers had been operating out of an adobe building they built themselves at Second and Lamar Streets in Austin. They quickly became popular with traders and travelers because they offered easy access to food, water, goods, and transportation along the river. In 1875, James Haltom sold his share in the business to Lorenzo Haltom for $10,000 dollars cash. Lorenzo continued to run the post until 1886 when he died suddenly at age 49 years old while traveling through Mexico City on business. In 1898, another investor purchased Lorenzo's interest in thePoste Restante company whichOwned and operated Posts along Interstate 35 between San Antonio de Bexar County and El Paso County in Texas for over 50 years until it went bankrupt in 1994 due to changes made within that state legislature about how POSTs should be managed (in direct opposition to what James Haltom had wanted). After Lorenzo's death, several local businessmen took control of Poste Restante assets including acquiring land adjacent to existing Gadsden Mall so that it could become Malls Underway shopping center which opened its doors August 1984 with anchor store JCPenney & Co., followed by Sears April 1992; all these anchors were moved out after 2000 when Kmart replaced Sears as mall anchor tenant then later Ross Dress for Less took over from Kmart as mall anchor tenant starting with May 2006; finally Checkers open its Doors October 2011 as mall anchor tenant replacing Ross Dress For Less who closed their doors effective December 2010 after more than 20 years in this role!

The city experienced a large population growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location on the Southern Pacific Railroad. During World War II, Haltom City played a key role in the local defense industry. The city's heavy manufacturing sector helped contribute to its nickname "the producing town."
