Haltom City, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-San Antonio metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Haltom in 1868 as a small farming community on the banks of the San Antonio River. By 1880, Haltom City had become an important transportation and communications center due to its location on both the Santa Fe Trail and U.S.-Mexico Railway. In 1955, Haltom City became one of thirty towns within Lyndon B Johnson's "Great Society" program to bring about social change in American cities through public education and economic development. The town's economy has shifted from agriculture to manufacturing over the past few decades, with many jobs now located in Austin or San Antonio. Haltom City's municipal government first formed in 1887 when two men - Jno Waddy and Sam Houston - bought land adjacent to each other for $2 per acre (0.86 ha). On January 1, 1907, Haltom City incorporated as a city under the name of "City of Haltom". The first mayor was James Acheson and later Jno Waddy served as Mayor pro tempore (1911-1920) and Mayor (1925-1929). As one result of World War II bombing raids on Japan during 1945, most businesses were destroyed or damaged; however, much downtown timber remained standing including buildings such as the old fortifications dating back to 1800s which are still extant today while several new buildings have been erected since then such as Baylor University Medical Center which opened in 1998 and replaced an earlier hospital built by German immigrants during their time as residents of Haltom City. In addition to downtown there were also several residential areas located around what is now I-10 outside town limits: Spring Branch near US 183 eastbound exit 2; West Side off US 183 southbound exit 3; East Side off I-10 northbound exit 134A just before milepost 133; Summit View near Loop 410 southbound exits 5 & 6 while Stillwater Park along Loop 410 northbound exits 7 & 8 contain some prewar farmsteads scattered among newer housing developments that have since been enclosed by highrise apartment blocks/residential towers built during recent decades following annexation into neighboring Austin neighborhoods such as Slaughterhouse Row/Eastlake Village/Victoria Park etc., making it difficult if not impossible for visitors who want individualviewsof these residences not only because they are surrounded by highrise buildings but also because they are hidden behind intervening arterials serving commercial areas nearer home rather than giving Visitors an appreciation for typical features associated with older innercity neighbourhoods containing large numbers of single family homesarrangedin close proximityto busy commercial corridors
On July 4, 1836, Haltom City was founded by General David Haltom. The town was named after him in honor of his victory over the Texas Rangers at the Battle of Palo Alto on April 6, 1835.
