Groves is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 14,563 at the 2010 census. It owes its name to Groves Rancho Grande de Tejas, which was first established in 1836 by John Groves and his brother-in-law Sam Houston. The rancho became part of the Rancho Santa Fe Mexican land grant given to Zacatecas Coahuila and Tamaulipas Mexico on November 7, 1846 by President James K. Polk during the American Civil War over disputed territory separating Texas from Mexico. The Groves family ran the ranch until it was sold to Texas Railroad Company in 1903. In 1917, Wm. Mabry & Sons (later Mabry Electric) began construction of a new electric power plant that became one of the largest in North America when it went online that year. The city has experienced various phases of growth and decline throughout its history; however, it is currently experiencing an economically revitalization process with many new businesses and residences being constructed along Interstate 10 east of downtown Groves.
The Groves community was located in the present-day city of Austin, Texas. It was founded on October 26, 1879 by John Wesley Groves and his wife Anna Maria. The Groves family had come to the United States from Germany in 1848. In 1878, John Wesley Groves donated 640 acres (250 hectares) of land to be used as a town square in Austin. On December 5, 1880, the first post office opened in the new town square. The name of the town was changed to Austin on January 12, 1881. The first store in Austin was called "Grove's Store". In 1893, J.W. Grubb became president of Texas A&M University and donated 1 million dollars for a new research building on campus that would become known as the Grove Research Center. The university named this structure after him and his wife Elizabeth Grubb Reachman Grubb. In 1907, he donated another 400 acres (160 hectares) of land to be used for an industrial park adjacent to his university property. This gift also included an industrial plant known as the Texas Instruments factory which would remain operational until it burned down in 1970; however, most of its equipment still survives today at that location within UT's Aggie Museum complex! Austin's population reached 250,000 by 1920; however it declined rapidly during World War II due to the effects of bombing raids on downtown Austin and other parts of the city;[1] however it increased markedly during peacetime because war-related businesses moved out of downtown while people returned to live near their homes or take up employment outside City Hall.[2] After World War II ended, Austin experienced significant growth due mainly to suburban development around I-35 corridor westward from downtown—the “New Town” moniker given it by developers at that time – but Downtown continued through various incarnations through 2000.[3][4] Downtown Austin is now a popular tourist destination with nightlife and arts events happening throughout many blocks throughout early morning into late evening hours thanks largely to ongoing redevelopment efforts led by Mayor Steve Adler over several decades starting circa 1990s continuing up until today
