In 1928, Groves became a city after annexation by Austin. The original grove of oak trees located at the corner of Guadalupe and McCullough Streets in Groves was started by George Washington Groves in 1879 as an agricultural community for his family. When he died in 1907 his son-in-law Prentice Ladd donated land for a park which included an Oak Forest Cemetery and Grove Street now known as Brazos Street near Highway 290). In 1928, Groves became a city after annexation by Austin when it was decided that other cities within the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area were being too important to maintain their own City Hall and Police Department separate from those in nearby Round Rock. This event helped spur development around Grooves with new businesses opening up including banks, restaurants, and more homes than ever before thanks to Interstate 90 making it easy for people to get around town. Today most of what used to be downtown #Groves today is called "the Old Town" due to this growth momentum but some streets such as Guadalupe have been renamed accordingly including: Elm St., Houston St., Saginaw St., Baylor Ave., Main St., US 290 & Loop 410
