Aftermath of Battle of Alamo: In order to finance his war efforts, General Houston issued an official proclamation on November 16th declaring all citizens “freeholders” who had furnished supplies or troops during hostilities against Mexico were exempt from taxation for three years. However, many Texans did not take this declare as seriously as they thought it would because they felt they still owed taxes to their Mexican overlords. Consequently, when battle began on April 26th outside of Austin proper between American forces under Captain James Fenton and Mexican regulars under Colonel Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna there were widespread looting and destruction taking place throughout Independence Parish
Groves was founded in 1881 by George Groves, a cattle and wagon driver. The town grew rapidly due to the growth of the local cotton industry. In 1907, Groves was named an open-air air museum after entrepreneur A.H. Kroeger.
